Purpose

What is My Purpose, God?

“The Spirit shows what is true and will come and guide you into the full truth. The Spirit doesn’t speak on his own. He will tell you only what he has heard from me, and he will let you know what is going to happen” (John 16:13 CEV).

God, what is my purpose in life? Have you ever cried out for God to show you why He created you? Have you struggled with what God’s will is for your life? I think we probably all have.

We can get impatient and want to run ahead of His timing for events in our lives. Or, you may be like me when I was a new Christian. I had no idea God wanted to show me His plan for my life.
I thought it was up to me to figure it all out. I’m so thankful that’s not the way it works!

God stepped out of my “religion box”, when He unexpectedly started showing me the “signs” for what I would do, in the future. John 16:13 says the Holy Spirit will show us what is going to happen. God fulfilled that in my biggest adventure with Him! It’s a journey that shows how fun God actually is. I was given a trail of “clues” to find and God did it in a miraculous way.

In December of 1999, God began prompting me to go to Louisville, Kentucky. He showed me, without a doubt, that I was to go. I couldn’t deny it any longer, when on December 10th, as I was driving to work, I looked up and gasped at a billboard that read, “Louisville, Kentucky, Midway Airlines, Nobody’s Faster out of the Gate!”

After numerous confirmations, I shared this with my husband. He exclaimed, “You have to go!” My Christmas gift was an airline ticket to Louisville for January 20-23, 2000. I was not used to traveling alone, especially out-of-state. My emotions went back and forth from being excited to being fearful. But God had it all planned out. I could have never expected what God had prepared.

One Saturday, before the trip, I spread out a map of Kentucky on the coffee table and contemplated a route I might take, to perhaps locate West Marion Elementary School. That school name was a “clue” as to why I was to go on the trip. As I searched the names of towns, I called for my husband and began to cry. Southeast of Louisville are the towns of Nazareth, Holy Cross, St. Francis, St. Mary, and ends in Calvary!

Shocked beyond belief, I asked God for more. “Please, God, tell me something else about the trip!” I was not familiar with Bible verses, but God impressed Isaiah 35:8, in my mind. I quickly found our Bible and turned to the most incredible confirmation of what the map had just revealed.

Isaiah 35:8 says, “And a main road will go through
that once-deserted land; it will be named
“The Holy Highway” (TLB).

Nazareth to Calvary! The Holy Highway!

God, how do You do that?

Verses that followed indicated God would be with me and even the most stupid couldn’t miss it! There would be no lion lurking, no dangers, the ransomed of the Lord would travel there and would go home singing with joy!

Well, God is always true to His Word. Even the most stupid couldn’t miss it. I was stunned that word was in the Bible! God led every step of the trip and “planted” clues to collect. Most were right alongside the road, except for a few that were a short distance off the highway. God had it set up so I really couldn’t miss it. And, I came home safely, singing with joy!

I am still speechless when I think about the coordination that it took for God to bring all the pieces of this puzzle together. After 18 years, I still don’t have the complete picture, but it is taking shape.

My friend, Barbara, introduced me to the expression, “It’s hard to see the picture when you’re the frame.” We need others to help us with the big picture. If God shines a light on part of this journey, please let me know.

Several of the “clues” have come to pass and there are several more to be fulfilled. God is faithful and I believe He will bring it all to pass, in His way and timing. Upcoming posts will share the 4-day adventure that has led to discovering my purpose.

God has a great plan and purpose for your life. It may not show up on a billboard, but He can reveal it to you in a way that connects you closer to Him than you ever thought possible. We don’t want to underestimate the power and creativity of God!

Yes, God can tell us what is going to happen, if He chooses. When we think about it, isn’t that what the Bible does? It tells us what has happened, but also what is going to happen- in the book of Revelation.

God spoke to many, in the Bible, about His plans for them and their future. Here’s just a couple.
Abraham was told he would be the father of many nations. “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations” (Genesis 17:4 NKJV).

Jeremiah got a word of encouragement for those in exile. “I say this because I know what I am planning for you,” says the LORD. “I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you. I will give you hope and a good future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NCV).

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever” (Hebrews 13:8 NKJV). Knowing our Creator has a specialized plan for each of us should touch us to our core. What response can we have but- worship, thanksgiving and obedience!

Jesus said, “I have glorified You on the earth. I have finished the work which You have given Me to do” (John 17:4 NKJV). In order for us to say the same, we need to know the work God is giving us to do.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10 NKJV).

God has prepared good works for us to do. Do we know what they are and are we on the path to finish them for His glory?

It’s all about Jesus! To God be the glory!
Blessings and love, Gayle
